A rare blue-and-white porcelain cup, known as “Hue blue,” de - Lot 233
A rare blue-and-white porcelain cup, known as “Hue blue,” decorated with a dragon drinking from the waves accompanied by a Thọ symbol. Marked with two horizontal characters in blue underglaze, “Trân Ngoan” (meaning “jade trinket”), on the base. Made in China for Vietnam, 18th century, Tây Son Dynasty (1788–1802). Diameter: 13.9 cm. This rare example from the Tây Son period faithfully reproduces the design painted on “Noi phu thi trung” porcelain, commissioned by the Trinh lords during the 18th century, notably for their palace in Thang Long, present-day Hanoi. In 1786, General Nguyen Hue (the future Emperor Quang Trung) took possession of these porcelain pieces and brought them back to Phú Xuân (Hue). Drawing with some accuracy on the designs of the “blue-and-white” porcelain from Hué produced for the previous dynasty, Vietnamese ambassadors began placing orders in 1789 for porcelain bearing the mark “Trân Ngoan,” meaning “jade trinket,” ,” written horizontally—thus distinguishing it from the usual vertical script found in the Middle Kingdom and on pieces produced for the Nguyen Court in Hué. Bibliography. Lynda Trouvé, Indochina: Treasures of the Hué Court. March 1, 2024. No. 22 Dish decorated with a dragon design amid waves, accompanied by a symbol of longevity (“Thọ”). Horizontal two-character blue underglaze mark reading “Trần Ngoạn” on the base.
