Our auction house latest sale dedicated exclusively to arts and art objects from Indochina and Vietnam was held at Drouot on September 30th, 2025.
Our Indochina chapter 20 sale confirmed the success of Mai Thu and the intimate scenes of children characteristic of his 1960s series, with the silk painting Les petits lecteurs (The Little Readers) fetching €67,600 (including fees).
This chapter was also an opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Indochina School of Fine Arts and its directors, with a highlight being an exceptional bronze sculpture of a Meo Warrior by Évariste Jonchère, which sold for €36,400 (including fees).
Celebrating the school's 100th anniversary also means paying tribute to its students, such as Mai Thu and Lê Pho, among the most famous, but also to lesser-known yet equally talented students such as Do Dinh Hiep or ong Xuan Nhi.
The portrait of an elegant woman in an ao dai, a drawing by Do Dinh Hiep, sold for €27,300 and was one of the highlights of the sale, as was a watercolor of a rice field scene by Luong Xuan Nhi, which fetched €18,452 including fees.
Sales of objects from the court of Huê also contributed to the success of this chapter 20 with good results, notably for a red and gold lacquered wooden box for imperial decree, which sold for €26,000 including fees.
These excellent results reflect our auction house's expertise in Indochinese and Vietnamese art, and its constant ability to rediscover and bring exceptional works to market.
