NAPOLEON [APPIANI (Andrea)]. [Fastes of... - Lot 133 - Lynda Trouvé
NAPOLEON [APPIANI (Andrea)]. [Fastes of Napoleon I, painted by Andrea Appiani, engraved by J. Longhi, M. Bisi, Benaglia, J. and F. Rosaspina. Dedicated to His Majesty Napoleon III by Pietro Barboglio] [sl], [sn], [sd (c. 1850)]. In-plane (32 x 65 cm) of 32 (out of 35) engraved plates on Chine appliqué, half tan basane (period binding). Without the (3) ff. of text (title, table and dedication). Spine missing, boards worn. Good condition inside the plates. A very rare suite of 35 plates engraved by Giuseppe Longhi, Michele Bisi and Francesco and Giuseppe Rosaspina after the paintings made between 1801 and 1807 by Andrea Appiani (1754-1817) for the Hall of the Caryatids in the Royal Palace of Milan at the request of Napoleon I and Prince Eugene. They represent, in a glorified and/or allegorical way, scenes from the Napoleonic epic, from the first Italian campaign (1796) to the victory of Friedland (1807), not forgetting the Egyptian campaign. This ensemble, of a very high quality of execution and an extraordinary format, is all the more important as the Caryatid Hall was bombed and burned down during the Second World War, leaving almost nothing of the frescoes, apart from this extremely rare representation.
