School of the painters travelers. Portrait... - Lot 114 - Lynda Trouvé
School of the painters travelers. Portrait of a young woman in Hanoi. Oil on cardboard dated in the upper right corner of "May 21" showing a young woman seated, dressed in the traditional ao dai. First half of the 20th century, circa 1920-1930. Dimensions: 52,5x32,5 cm. (Slightly missing). Unsigned, the work is nonetheless striking for its play of contrasts and the quality of its details. From the discreet but sparkling earring, to the shimmering green silk of the traditional ao dai, everything in this work contributes to render an ethnographic reality, in the posture, the attitude as well as in the realism of the young woman's features. Her singularly knotted bun "à l'ancienne" as recalled in the engravings of the "Monographie dessinée de l'Indochine - Cochinchine" published in 1935 by the Gia Dinh School of Art, gives a glimpse of the Cochinchese origin of the subject. A common theme in the iconography of the period, portraits of young women in ao dai were particularly magnified by the work of famous artists from the Indochina School of Fine Arts such as Nam Son or Mai Thu.
