André MAIRE (1898-1984). School of the travelling... - Lot 119 - Lynda Trouvé
André MAIRE (1898-1984). School of the travelling painters. Nandin bull in the ruins of Angkor. Black stone and red chalk, signed and located "Angkor" on the lower left. Around 1955. Dimensions: 50,5x32 cm. From his second trip to Cambodia André Maire brought back a large number of leaves. The ruins of Angkor still fascinated him as much as ever and the artist tirelessly sketched the site during his wanderings in the company of his friend Henri Marchal, curator of the site and eminent member of the French School of the Far East. The strangling fig trees, their vertiginous vines that engulf the ruins of the temples allow him to give free rein to visions that are sometimes poetic and fantastical, which he associates with precise studies of the statuary studied in museums, sometimes dreaming of archaeological conditions that he replaces in his compositions, such as here the majestic Nandin bull, the sacred bull of Shiva, whose attitude is simply kneeling, which is different on the site of Preah-Kô in Angkor. Bibliography: Lorédana Harscoët-Maire, André Maire, l'Itinéraire décoratif d'un peintre voyageur. Gallimard edition, 2008.
