NGUYEN NAM SON (1890-1973). Portrait of an... - Lot 163 - Lynda Trouvé
NGUYEN NAM SON (1890-1973). Portrait of an Elegant Tonkinese Woman, 1938. Sanguine and graphite on framed paper, signed and dated lower right 1938. Dimensions: 81x54.5 cm. Provenance: - Collection of Nguyen Vàn Lam, Hanoi. - Private collection, acquired from the above. Exhibition: "Paris Hanoi Saigon", from March 20 to May 17, 1998 at the Pavillon des Arts in Paris. Second drawing by Nam Son presented in this sale, the work is like the previous one, typical of the artist's production. Possibly unfinished or voluntarily left as such according to the non finito technique, the drawing is remarkable for its delicacy. The young woman is seated, her arm folded on the back of the chair, simply sketched with simple but very precise pencil lines. With her hand gracefully dangling, the model seems to be in an attitude similar to that of the portraits of European masters. The scene is a snapshot of everyday life: the young woman, smiling slightly, seems to have stopped reading, the pages of which are discreetly suggested on her lap and merge with the almost antique-like drape of her ao dai, highlighted with white chalk.
