VU CAO DAM (1908-2000). Bouquet of peonies,... - Lot 169 - Lynda Trouvé
VU CAO DAM (1908-2000). Bouquet of peonies, circa 1949. Oil on silk framed, signed lower left. Dimensions: 55x46 cm. The work will appear in the catalog raisonné being prepared by Mrs Yannick Vu, the artist's successor. The bouquets of flowers are rare in the work of Vu Cao Dam and even more so on the market. The artist has chosen here to represent peonies, queens of flowers in China as in Vietnam where they are qualified by the expression "hoa vương". A symbol of prosperity, honor and sometimes associated with love, the peony acquired its letters of nobility during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), a period from which, qualified as a flower of "prestige and wealth", it became a recurring motif in iconography. Combining his mastery of silk painting with his fine knowledge of scholar's painting, Vu Cao Dam delivers here a work that is both modern and resolutely heir to a thousand-year-old culture. The bouquet of peonies we present is very similar to the one offered in the Sotheby's sale "Modern And Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings" of April 6, 2014, lot n°326.
