S.M. HAM NGHI (1871-1944). - Lot 69
S.M. HAM NGHI (1871-1944). Georges Antoine ROCHEGROSSE (1859-1938). Garden near Algiers. Oil on canvas, signed, dedicated and dated 1903 lower right. Dedicated "Au Prince d'Annam [ndlr S.M. Ham Ngi] en témoignage de précieuse amitié". Dimensions: 40x29.5 cm. It's hard not to think of El Biar, where S.M. Ham Ngi lives in exile, far from his native land. Rochegrosse, a friend of the Emperor as evidenced by his abundant correspondence, painted the same motif of luxuriant, heat-crushed nature, devoid of any human presence, as did S.M Ham Ngi, who, at the turn of the 1900s, painted the natural world around him on a daily basis.
